| As
part of
their ever expanding range of activities that include an Astronomical
element in them, Omega Holidays organize an Arctic Adventure trip and trips
to coincide with their Lapland/Santa trips for children of all ages. This
allows for the possible spectacle of the Northern Lights viewed from the
ground but from a higher latitude and closer to the Auroral arc. I was
on the December 9th-10th 2006 Lapland trip and had a great time although
it was too cloudy to see any aurora - details and images of that trip can
be found from this link. Several trips are planned by Omega for early 2008 and these are listed below. 'A winter day in the Artic Circle' excursions take you from Birmingham, Gatwick, Manchester, Belfast and Bristol airports to Tromso in northern Norway. for more details and to book contact Omega Holidays from the info below. Overview of excursion:
A 3 hour flight takes you over frozen fjords and snow covered
mountains to Tromso, 300 km north of the Arctic Circle. There will be a guided
tour of the city, a visit to Polaria, Norways stunning Arctic Vistors Centre.
There will be an illustrated talk about the Northern Lights by an astronomer.
In the evening a cable car takes you up onto Mount Storsteinen where, weather
permitting, the astronomer will give a guided tour of the night sky and hopefully
the northern lights will be on display. After this the coach will return
you to the airport for the return flight. |
