I hope you enjoy
looking at them and perhaps may think to have a go yourselves.
Some of the older images were
originally taken on slide and print film and have been scanned and
transferred to CD Rom
where they have undergone
slight brightness/contrast enhancement so they show better on these pages.

Solar Eclipses
REMEMBER - always take care when
observing the Sun!
Total Solar Eclipse 1999
After waiting for almost 3 decades since I first learned there would be a Total Solar Eclipse visible from the UK, I awaited the August 11th 1999 Solar Eclipse with baited breath. Lorraine & I took the decision to travel down to Torquay in Devon at the invitation of the Torquay Astronomical Society as we wanted to witness the event from the UK as there would not be another chance to see a Total Solar Eclipse from UK shores in our lifetime again. Although, as the pictures show, the weather was against us on the day it was a privilege to stand under the shadow of the moon and despite the haze & cloud I at least managed to see the Bailey's Beads for the first time ever just before the clouds completely blocked the Sun & Moons combined disks. It was worth it for the wonderful hospitality of TAS and the great atmosphere of everyone that gathered at their site.
And so it begins...
The above 3 images
are the best I was able to take under the circumstances using the 500mm F8
lens & a 2 times converter with 100 ISO slide film and an approx. exposure
of 1/250 sec using a mylar filter. The first exposure was taken at approx.
10:30 BST, the 2nd exposure at approx. 10:55 BST whilst the end exposure
was taken at approx. 11:16 BST shortly after the Sun reappeared.
