Heading back through the ice
Late on the day of the North Pole (28th) the Yamal turned southwards and began to head back to Franz Joseph Land. The day of the 29th was foggy and at one point we even had a little snow but an Arctic Fox was spotted early on (I didn’t see it unfortunately) and during the day lectures continued with Christine, Petra and Viktor. Engine room tours were also undertaken and another group had cocktails with the Captain..  Early on the 30th Phil spotted a Polar Bear and we managed to spot and photograph several including a mother and her cub. Later that day we reached Franz Joseph Land again and a landing was made on Champs Island. There we found glacial debris, glacial erratic boulders and stunning scenery all around. Marie spotted an Arctic Fox and whilst some of the team tried to get closer Petra and I  were asked to keep with a larger group of passengers as the explored the edges of the glacier  and nearby rock outcrops. Our helicopter trip back to the ship was stunning as well for we flew alongside the towering cliffs of the glacier where it met the sea before heading across the water to the Yamal.
