First butterfly of the year, female Comma on March 10th just before lunch on a sunny day. Nice to see it return on Fri 13th as well! No more due to cooler weather until April 5th when we had our first Peacock butterfly return. A couple of days later as the warm weather waxed and waned we then had a male Brimstone return on April 7th followed the next day by a Small Tortoiseshell and male Green Veined White.  On April 17th we had a Male Orange Tip then on the 20th a Large White whilst April 21st saw the first return of a Holly Blue followed by a female Brimstone on the 24th and a  Small White on the 26th.  April 27th we spotted a female GVW to end the month. May saw no new returns but several regulars then on June 5th we had our first confirmed Red Admiral. June weather was not kind to us so the next new return was the Male Large Skipper on June  24th followed by the Speckled Wood on the 27th then the Male Meadow Brown on the 29th finishing June with a flurry of new sightings!

July again had mixed fortunes with the weather but we did get some new returns and quite a few regulars to brighten the month for us. On 3rd we spotted the female Large Skipper then on the 4th the female Large White. A very faded Painted Lady arived on the 9th and on the same day we had our first Ringlet. Two more returns for the month were the Male Gatekeeper on the 18th and a Male Common Blue to end the month on the 31st.

Although we had quite a few of the regular species turn up we had no new returns for August, Sept or October so ending the year with a cumulative total of 17 species, somewhat down on previous years probably due to the weather and the steady development of the industrial estate behind us.
