Comma Butterfly - this one has a damaged RHS lower
wing
A second Comma on the same day - this one with all wings
intact.
A Peacock Butterfly takes a rest!
After a lot of watching we finally confirmed via this photo
this is a Green Veined White Butterfly.
Just after the GVW landed and stayed for a photo shoot!
GVW again - same one.
And again!
A Small Tortoiseshell Butterfly landed on the blossom
and gave a show.
Give us a twirl!
The Small Tortoiseshell Butterfly landed further on
the blossom and displayed better!.
An enlargement of the left hand view to show more detail.
The GVW has become a regular during the recent warm and
sunny days and often lands on the Forget-Me-Nots in our garden.
Another view of it on the F-M-N's.
Good to see our Daffodils also attract the Green Veined
White
Getting closer to that nectar!
The damaged Comma returns to its favourite sunny spot
which helps when trying to photograph it! This was taken on the 18th.
It returned again on the next day.
Although Lorraine spotted the Speckled Wood Butterfly
back in March this was the first good chance to photograph one when it
landed for a while to sun itself.
Slightly different view as I tried to move round it to
get a better shot - it flew off though before I got the 'plan' view!
Speckled Wood taken on the 20th
Female Speckled Wood on our hedge on the 22nd
Green Veined White clearly showing why it's got its name
- and it really loves our daffodils!
And another view - both taken on the 22nd
Female Speckled Wood ,26th April - currently it and the
Green Veined White are the easiest to photograph as at least they do land
and stay still occasionally!
Speckled Wood taken on the 26th - it landed amongst some
dead wood on the ground near our fence and stayed long enough to get this
shot.
Spot the Speckled Wood on the hedge - just shows how well
the camouflage works!
Enlargement of the left hand image showing the butterfly.
At last the Large White landed long enough to take a picture
or two! This is the Male as it has no upper dark spots.
Another view of the Large White
Also got our first image of the year of the Male Orange
Tip but it wouldn't open it's wings to show the orange!
Male Orange Tip taken on the 29th April
Male Orange tip - 2nd view taken on the 29th -
nice 'plan' view showing the upper wing surfaces
Green Veined White - good view of the head and under wing
green veins.
Closest side view yet taken on April 30th of the Green
Veined White!
April 30th was a good day to get close to the Male Orange
Tip as well! Note the detail of the green pattern and how different it is
to the GVW.
May 2009
The Small White Butterfly finally settled long enough
to be photographed on May 2nd
Best ever plan view of the Speckled Wood (female) again
on May 2nd
Two views of a Female Large White that came into the garden
on the 7th. Note the differenec with the Male I imaged in April as the
Female has large dark spots on the upper wing surface.
Side view of the Female Large White.
A slightly worn Peacock also landed on our back fence.
Note the enlargement of the head and antennae on the second image.
May 15th - Male Orange Tip - nice view as it began to
open up slightly.
Another view with the wings closed.
May 20th - haven't managed to photograph the Holly Blue
yet this year but did get this view of the Male Common Blue that surprised
us by turning up on our lawn!
The Small White also made a return visit that day and I got
this shot of it.
Sunday, May 24th gloriously sunny and warm and brought
a few Butterflies out including this Large White.
...and this view of a battered Green Veined White feeding.
Also on the 24th... a Small white let me get close
...close enough to see it's hairy body and eyes!
The Brimstones return and at last allow us to photograph
them (well at least the female landed!).
Here is a better side view of the female Brimstone.
The Male subbornly refused to land to be photographed
so here is an unusual 'in flight' shot I caught. It is highly magnified hence
the poorer quality but does show the yellow upper surface and the fact it
is slightly damaged - probably due to the rain we had a few days earlier.
A worn looking female Holly Blue also paid us a brief visit
but long enough for me to capture as shown here.
May 25th and a Painted Lady visited our garden and stayed
to be photographed as shown in these two views.
A side view of the Painted Lady.
